Is this big enough?...Tutorial Thursday

Let's talk a little about print size. We all know that bigger is more beautiful:) Ok, maybe I just made that up but seriously when I enlarge my own prints larger than an 11x14, it just makes a statement on the wall!

So, you know you want your prints to use the wall space you dedicate to them but perhaps you are still struggling to determine the correct size of image for your particular space. A bathroom may not be able to hold a 20x30 and a large open wall may look a little silly with only an 8x10. Well, I'm here to help! I am happy to come to your home and help you design your walls. Or, you can send me a picture of your space and I can help you that way too. But, for now, we'll talk online some more. So, depending on the size of the space you are planning to hang your image(s), you will want to use that information to determine the ideal size. You also want to think about whether or not you are hanging a print to be framed (adds inches) or you are hanging gallery wrapped canvas without a frame.

First, let's talk about gallery wrapped canvases. I just love the look and feel of them personally. They are definitely a favorite of mine. They are simple, gorgeous and look great as a single or in a group (more on that soon). I love the texture to the canvas as well! If you decide to go with a single gallery wrapped canvas, I would make it larger than a normal print. They don't have the added inches of a frame and so you can fill the space more with the image. Here is an example of a nursery with an 24x36 canvas versus an 8x10 hung above the crib. Which one feels right to you?

Now let's look at a few sizes with frames. I think a 24x36 framed in this space might be a little overwhelming, so I chose to go with a 20x30 framed.

And, here is an 8x10 framed for comparison in the same space. It is cute, but seems a little...well, small for this particular wall.

So, you might be thinking. "Sure, this is all well and good but my walls don't look like that and how am I to use this information to help me in my own home?"

I was hoping you would say that, because I am here to help! I offer in-home consultations with my sessions and I bring a handy dandy tool, a measuring tape, and some samples of actual prints and canvases to give you an idea of what a 20x30 sized gallery wrapped canvas versus an 8x10 would look like on your wall. And, if you prefer frames, I bring color samples so we can check them out with the colors in your home. Whether you are wanting a splash of color or a beautiful neutral to accentuate your images, there are many colors from which to choose.

Sometimes I get lucky and newborns sleep from start to finish. And, by lucky, I mean REAL lucky. I figured out somewhere along the first day of motherhood that "sleeping like a baby" could be easily interpreted as "not very often", "not very long", and/or "not very sound"...haha. Ok, so maybe I had a tough first baby, I'm not holding any grudges as I have had a chance to catch up on my sleep now! Anyway, I am rambling. The bottom line is that I love this couple and feel so honored that they made the trip to my studio to capture their new baby boy. He held out to the very end for me to get a few shots of him by himself. I am so glad he finally gave in and relaxed a little...what a cutie! Hope you enjoy:) Thanks for looking:)

The J girls...Newborn twins...12 days old...Central Kansas Newborn Photographer

Such a sweet family of girls! They are all so beautiful and it is just amazing to hold both of them together. My husband is a twin and sometimes I try to imagine how it was for his Mom, but I know that I really cannot get there, you have to live it and God gives us the strength to get through it I'm sure. This mom is such a rock star, she was looking fabulous and I'm sure she was tired, but it didn't show! I really enjoyed our session and appreciated the help from fellow photographer Stephanie Meier out of Beloit! It was fun to have three photographers working together, the mother of these twins also has a photography business herself and does some really beautiful work under Amanda Janzen Photography. This adorable baby boy came to visit me a few weeks ago and he was so precious and so very alert for a wee 9 day old. Sweet Baby B...8 days old...Kansas Newborn Photographer

I really love sleepy babies for most of my newborn poses because they are easier to move and mold, but eye contact from a newborn baby is so magical and I enjoy that too. This little guy was pretty alert and happy most of our session. He did manage to grab a few cat naps during our time together for some sweet sleepy shots as well.:)

 Babies are such a blessing and I am so honored each and every time I get the call to photograph them in their first few days! I love this verse from James 1:17. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Sweet Baby E...8 days new...Central Kansas Newborn Photographer

Newborns are just so special to photograph. They are only a small size for a very short time. The days may seem long in the beginning when they prefer your arms over the crib, or fall asleep in your arms without a care in the world while the housework stares back at you. I have often struggled with the balance of being a caring mother and keeping my home clean and running, and running a business at the same time. Photographing these sweet little subjects reminds me of how small my babies were when we brought them home from the hospital. It takes me back to the birth of our first born and I realize that I need to try harder each and every day to BE HERE for them and not just with my presence. At the corporation I used to work for before we had our first baby, they had a motto to "BE HERE NOW" and it still sticks with me today as I apply it to my relationship with my children...to BE HERE NOW for them:) Thanks for looking:)
